| Ed Wood (1994) **** (Out of 4) Tim Burton is wonderful, poignant and often hilarious tribute to Ed Wood, his films and their relation to the laundering of horror star Bela Lugosi. It is strange but I caught the first sign of this return to the open and left the theater cussing a storm because I felt it was making fun of Wood and Lugosi, but after a second vision came to love the Ed Wood Comedy and today I call it the largest DVD film Ed Wood ever made about making movies. Burton is the address right on the mark every step of the way perfectly capture the heart of "Z" movies that most do not even spit in much less see. The Ed Wood Comedy is very funny, but the relationship between Wood and Lugosi is also very heart warming. Depp should have received an Oscar nomination for his performance and Landau is the largest work of his career. The supporting cast is great, especially Mike Starr as the infamous producer George Weiss. |
| Johnny Depp is hilarious as ever, and Martin Landau also manages to portray a well rounded character after all is said and done. Two things I particularly liked about this film: 1) Ed Wood entreprenurial spirit. It is always a go-getter, in search of opportunities that the world is pushing down. Vampires call date, the funding of a DVD film Ed Wood of the Baptist Church, etc. 2) How not Ed Sulka when Sarah Jessica Parker leaves the character of him. Instead, go out and find someone who like him for who he is. So many times in Hollywood, people end up back with old lovers, mainly because it's an easy story to tell because you do not have to enter another character. But this is more realistic and teaches a lesson better. If you are not compatible with someone, you can always find someone else. |
| Tim Burton is undoubtedly the best, most complete and Johnny Depp is superb. Perhaps it is the complete understanding of their subject that allows Tim Burton to fly so high here. The script beautifully adapted from the possibility of some excellent character designs, Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi, Vincent D'Onofrio as Orson Wells. "When you write a script it gets better and better," said Ed / Johnny to his girlfriend with a smile full of innocence. What a performance! Johnny Depp is the only type of player, never had anyone quite like him. How do you manage to disappear behind a character and still with him all his bag of tricks, I do not know, but it does.
