David Mamet takes this story of thieves along many twists and turns, some of which work and some of which don't. Gene Hackman plays the brilliant leader of a gang (Delroy Lindo, Ricky Jay & Rebecca Pigeon as Hackman's youngish wife), which pulls off complex heists for a despicable fence (Danny DeVito). After stiffing the gang on a jewelry robbery, DeVito forces the gang to go after a Swiss gold shipment and to use his nephew (Sam Rockwell) in the crime. No one trusts anyone and every step is shaded with the unexpected.

Based on R1 DVD David Mamet is famous for the complicated plot and Heist is no exception. Unfortunately for the viewer - Mamet neglects the characters have to explain what they intend to do before doing so it is difficult to know when to change Plan A to backup Plan B to Plan C .. this happens a lot in the film. It is also impossible to find out what each of the characters seems to be the current work plan. All this leads to a loss of tension as they sit and wait and see how it plays out. A good DVD film Heist that theft could have been better. 7 / 10
