Nikolai Rochenko, a Russian ballet dancer who 8 years ago defected to the West. He is in a plane flying over Russia when all of a sudden, a malfunction forces the plane to land in Russia. The KGB tells everyone that his injuries are so severe that he has to remain confide for a while. But in reality they want him to return to them, so they bring him to his old apartment and an American, Raymond Greenwood, who himself defected to Russia several years ago, is placed there to keep an eye on him. However, Rochenko is not about to give in and is determined to escape. So with help from his former lover, he gets word to the Americans. And even Raymond is started to be disillusioned with Russia, and he has to decide if he is going to do what he was sent to do or help Rochenko.

Not enough is said about Helen Mirren's magnificent performance as the former lover and balerina. Its effects are perfect Russian. And nice legs. About 2 faults are the most important. First of all, the DivX film White Nights was the construction of a grand final in which Barishnikov give a great final performance never happened. Secondly, through much of the film, and Hines said Barishnikov and bickered with each other to the point of antagonizing others. Yes it is supposed to be a clash of culture. But it was too far. Suddenly, near the end became lovy-dovy and cooperated. Hard to believe. If you dismiss these people fau find a refreshing, intriguing film: White Nights worth sitting through more than 2 hours to see.

I have little to add to the wonderful comments made, unless the dance in this DivX Movie White Nights is spectacular. Hines is a fantastic actor and dancer. Baryshnikov is absolutely sublime, both in their scenes of dancing and raw emotion that shows in their desperation to return to American soil. Actually dropped in real life, it was obviously a valuable experience to draw from in this film. I love one of its lines: "I am still in Russia, I am not just Soviet." Although the cold was (supposedly), this White Nights movie makes an excellent historical piece, and a great dance movie. I can see again and again, and still fun.

I saw him when he came first in 85 or so. Now that I am older, conservative, and I've seen a lot of ballet and modern dance (Paul Taylor, Alvin Ailey, Bill T. Jones, DTH, New York City Ballet, Ballet of Miami, etc.) let alone have seen here in DC Baryshnikov in the first year of its "Draft White Oak Dance," I can honestly say that this is one of the best movies of the inclusion of dance with a tense plot. Isabella Rosellini first appearance in the film, too - is as good now, I can not believe I forgot. I suppose that is what makes the old and the prospect for you. I recommend to anyone, even if they are not interested in dance.
